Promoting conservation of our natural resources, beautification of our local area and the protection of trees, plants & animals unique to our New Jersey Pinelands.
BUTTERFLY GARDEN & LENDING LIBRARY:
The Butterfly Garden is located in Dr. Still Park behind the Municipal Center at 17 North Main Street in Medford and is maintained by PGC members. The garden, dedicated on June 6, 2015, highlights a native plant habitat for butterflies and other pollinators and is listed on the Rosalyn Carter Butterfly Trail. The trail begins in Plains, Georgia and connects gardens across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan providing much needed habitat for butterflies.
Also in the garden is the PGC Lending Library, featuring adult and children books with a nature, ecology and conservation theme. The public is invited to drop by and borrow a book or donate a book.
COLONIAL HERB GARDEN:
Colonial Herb Day is held each fall at the Herb Garden established by the Pinelands Garden Club at the Gazebo in Medford Village. The use and culture of herbs from colonial times is taught to elementary grade students. Members dress in colonial costume and serve home-made breads, cookies and similar products made with herbs.
Annual seasonal plantings of large containers will decorate our town's Main Street. Contact Kathy Rossi (email@example.com) to help plant summer annuals.
MEDFORD POST OFFICE GARDEN:
The Garden at the Medford Post Office is located at 326 Stokes Rd and was dedicated in March 1999. The garden was planned in conjunction in cooperation with the Medford Shade Tree Commission. The plantings include Junipers, a Kousa dogwood, Stella d'oro lilies, Dianthus 'Cedar Pink", Potentilla 'Gold Finger' and some native plantings. The garden is maintained by members of the Club.
The Park is located at the intersection of Main Street and Allen Avenue. The Pinelands Garden Club maintains plantings in the park.
Promoting the love of gardening and stimulating knowledge.
The love of gardening is a seed that once sown never dies. -Gertrude Jekyll
Arbor Day is held annually in conjunction with Medford Leas and the Medford School System. The aim is to educate the public, particularly the youth of Medford, in the care and planting of trees. A celebration with elementary grade students from alternating schools is held in the Spring.
BLUE STAR MEMORIAL BY-WAY:
The Blue Star Memorial honors service men and women who have served, are serving and will be serving in the Armed Forces and is located on Route 70 near the intersection of Skeet Rd and Chairville Rd. The original memorial was established in 1978 at the Medford Circle. When the circle was removed by the DOT, this new site was chosen and rededicated on November 9, 2009. The Pinelands Garden Club and DOT share in the maintenance of this site. A wreath laying ceremony is held twice a year by the Pinelands Garden Club in honor of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.
MEDFORD CARE CENTER:
The Garden Club promotes the therapeutic aspects of gardening at the Medford Care Center located at 185 Tuckerton Rd. Patients enjoy making small floral displays for their bedside tables. Flowers ease depression, inspire social networking and refresh memory as we age.
Each Christmas Pinelands Garden Club decorates one or more rooms and an outside area at the historic Smithville Mansion at 803 Smithville Rd Easthampton, NJ 08060. Preservation of the historic time period of the house is a prime consideration in the choice of decorations. Plan to tour the mansion during the Victorian Christmas!
Youth activities will be offered at the Butterfly Garden in Dr. Still Park. Children from the community are welcome to attend. Garden Club members instruct the children in gardening techniques, flower arranging and environmental topics that are especially relevant to the Pinelands. If you would like to schedule an educational experience, please message us on Facebook at Pinelands Garden Club of Medford.
